If you have a soft spot for sunsets, you’re not alone. There’s something absolutely beautiful about watching the sun disappear below the horizon. The vibrant hues of reds, pinks, oranges and yellows are completely mesmerizing. However, although sunsets are stunning, they can be difficult to photograph. Have you ever tried to capture a beautiful sunset only to be disappointed by the quality of the photo? We’ve put together some tips on how to take great photos of the next sunset.
Plan AheadAlthough great shots can be taken on a whim, the best pictures often require some planning. Scope out some places that you think would be good for catching the sunset and research when exactly the sun will set. We recommend arriving at least half an hour before — the lead-up is usually the prettiest part of a sunset. If you’re going on vacation and aren’t sure where the best sunset spots are, try checking Instagram for inspiration.
Check the WeatherA lot of people may think to only take sunset photos when the sky is perfectly clear. While clear skies can produce gorgeous colours, sometimes a few clouds can add an extra wow factor.
Don’t Forget the Rule of ThirdsThis is a classic photography rule, but for a good reason. Following the rule of thirds will help you create a more balanced photo. To follow this rule, imagine breaking down your image into thirds horizontally and vertically so it’s split into different sections.
Consider a TripodA tripod is often overlooked but can actually come in handy. We’re not saying you can’t take great photos without one, but trust us, a tripod will make your life so much easier. Especially if you have a shaky hand! You’ll be able to take time setting up the perfect shot while your camera is fixed. Also, if you’re sunset chasing with friends or family, you may want to get some group shots in front of the sunset. Self-timer is your best friend!
Exposure is KeyWhen taking sunset photos, make sure to dial down the exposure. If you don’t the photo will be overtaken by the intense sunlight. We suggest experimenting and taking a variety of shots at different exposures. Once you play around with it a bit, you’ll find the perfect setting for that sunset.
Many think photographing a sunset is easy, but as you can see, there are a lot of elements to consider. Hopefully these tips will help you capture some Instagram-worthy sunset photos that will truly blow you away.
